How This World Can Be Better By Being More Inclusive
Ask critical questions and thrive in an inclusive workspace
I recently came across this talk on Linkedin, and it resonate a lot with me. So here I wanted to share the learning with you.
1/ Don't weaponize gratitude.
In short, we should be paid for what we contribute and not be threatened by not being grateful enough. If we are given more responsibilities, then paid us in money, opportunity, or promotion, not just gratitude. Being grateful and being treated fairly aren't mutually exclusive. We can be thankful and also know precisely what we deserve.
2/ Invest in potential
Actual investment values potential over proof. Our lack of evidence is not because we are not qualified; it's because we have yet to be given the opportunity. Cultural change takes time and money. Invest in a new voice and provide the support we need so we can thrive to do the job you hire us to do.
3/ Make spaces
Make space for minorities. Let the minority shine through your corporation; why? The diversity team performs better.
Not convinced? Study shows(quoted in the talks): Corporations with more gender diversity on their executive team were 25% more likely to experience above-average profitability. The more racially diverse company had 36% more profit.
4/ Upgrade the talk
Stories are how we understand ourselves, others, and the world. And what we see throughout everyday life controls the narratives and impacts culture. When it comes to issues that affect the minority, not just let the minority be included in the coverage but let them DRIVE the stories.
I hope you find valuable lessons here. When you are looking out for new position, ask questions:
When is the last time they promote an employee and what do they do in order to get the promotion or raise?
Do they encourage people to take risks and how do they support the person along the way?
What’s the composition of their upper management team? do they have women? do they have people with colors?
How do they motivate people who are in a less-powered position to speak up? This can be if you are working remotely but others mostly work in the office, do they value your voice? Or your team is relatively small compared to other teams, does your team get to voice out and influence the strategy?
Create a future that everyone is invited and seated equally.
